Okay, the stock stereo sounds and looks like crap. I'm most concerned about how to select speakers that will sound good due to the small 5.25" rear speakers and low placement of the door openings.

What do people recommend in terms of speaker types and sizes? I do plan on getting a sub for the trunk so I am open to any suggestions on this also. I am thinking about a 10" in the center trunk opening.

Me too! I am curious about the speaker upgrade and upgrading the receiver unit also. I have heard that upgrading the receiver is a real pain in the ass becvasue of wiring harness issues Question

If you replace the head unit and plan to keep the stock speakers, you need a $100 adapter due to each speaker having its own an individual amp. This could be the wiring harness problem you heard about.

The stock Bose system uses amps at the speaker, instead of the usual in the head unit. Converting over is possible, but converters are used if only a portion of the system is replaced. I think they make a coverter for going either way, replace head unit, or replace speakers, of course, money permitting, replacing it all is a great upgrade.

My question is about noise being created by the converter, it may not be worth it if it adds more noise, but may be good for an interim solution to replacing it all.

I believe the front 8" woofers have their own amp while the rest run off the head unit.

The easiest way to determine which speaker is powered is to "meter" the speaker, if it has more than 3 ohms of resistance, usually 3 to 4 ohms, than they should be able to be replaced by any standard off-the-shelf speakers.
